One of the most unique regions of Italy, the island of Sardinia has long enjoyed autonomy and was only united with the rest of Italy in 1860. Sardinia is famed for it's delicious cuisine, such as seadas and porcheddu, as well as it's beautiful beaches and tiny fishing villages. Sardinia has several fascinating UNESCO World Heritage listed nuragic sites (complexes of ancient towers that look like beehives) as well as several Roman and Punic sites. Scuba diving, wind surfing and hiking are all popular pursuits on the island, as is exploring the many towns that are scattered across the region such as Cagliari (the capital), Olbia, Sassari and Alghero. Sardinia is intersected by two main roads, the E25 and the SS131DCN, which link the major towns to one another. Olbia, the northern ferry harbour, and Cagliari, the southern ferry harbour, are linked to one another by the SS131DCN road.
Sardinia is serviced by Cagliari-Elmas Airport (five kilometres north of Cagliari), Olbia-Costa Smeralda Airport (four kilometres south-east of Olbia) and Fertilia Airport (seven kilometres north of Alghero). The airlines that visit the island include BMI (to Olbia-Costa and Cagliari-Elmas), British Airways (to Cagliari-Elmas), Ryan Air (to all three airports), and Easy Jet, Thomas Cook and Jet2.com (to Olbia-Costa). Cagliari-Elmas, the largest of the three airports, sees close to three million passengers a year and is by far the most 'international' of the complexes. As Sardinia is a location that is best explored by public transport (some of the more remote locations cannot be reached by public means), it is advisable to hire a car upon arrival - Budget, Dollar Thrifty, AutoEuropa, Easy Car and EuroRent are among the rental companies present on the island.
